Skateboarding is as much an art form as it is a sport—it demands skill, resilience, and a deep connection to movement. In Kumasi, where open recreational spaces are scarce, the Troop Skateboard Community (Troop SB) is carving out its own.
More than just a collective of skaters, they’re creators, blending skate culture with music, art, and social impact. By transforming sidewalks into skateparks, they’re building a movement that gives young people the freedom to push boundaries, express themselves, and redefine their city’s creative landscape.
Breaking Barriers: Skateboarding in Ghana
Ghana has not traditionally embraced skateboarding as a mainstream sport. Unlike football or basketball, which have deep cultural roots and widespread acceptance, skateboarding has had little representation in the country’s sporting landscape. But, Troop SB is determined to change that.
The lack of dedicated skate parks, limited access to equipment, and the absence of structured training programs have made it difficult for young Ghanaians to engage with the sport.
Despite these challenges, Troop SB is creating safe spaces where young people can learn, practice, and grow within a supportive skateboarding community. Their mission is to make skateboarding accessible, exciting, and a viable form of recreation for the youth of Kumasi and beyond.
Skatematics: The Classroom on Wheels

One of Troop SkateBoard Community’s most impactful initiatives is Skatematics, a free monthly skateboarding tuition program designed to introduce the sport to students in junior high schools across Kumasi. This initiative aims to bridge the gap between academia and skate culture, showing that skateboarding is not just a sport but also a medium for self-discipline, resilience, and creative problem-solving.
On October 25, 2024, Troop SB hosted a major Skatematics session at Modern Educational Complex in Sepaase, Kumasi. The event attracted dozens of young participants eager to experience skateboarding for the first time. The goal of the program was to unleash creativity in Ghanaian youth, helping them discover the physical, mental, and social benefits of the sport.
Skatematics is a long-term initiative, with plans to hold sessions in various junior high schools for a maximum of five months annually.
By introducing skateboarding in schools, Troop SB is normalizing the sport in Ghana and positioning it as a valuable extracurricular activity that fosters self-confidence and discipline.
The Transformative Power of Skatematics
Skatematics, more than a free skateboarding lesson, is a movement designed to transform the lives of young people in Kumasi. Through this initiative, Troop Skateboard is creating opportunities for children, especially those from underprivileged backgrounds, to discover their potential and develop essential life skills.
By making skateboarding accessible, Troop Skateboard is empowering the youth to dream beyond their circumstances, giving them a sense of purpose and direction. The program also nurtures creativity, allowing children to see skateboarding not just as a sport but as a form of self-expression. Every trick they learn, every board they step on, and every challenge they overcome fuels their artistic exploration and individuality.
Perhaps most importantly, Skatematics builds resilience and confidence. Skateboarding is a sport of persistence: falling and getting back up is part of the process. As students navigate the highs and lows of learning new skills, they develop a mindset that prepares them for challenges in other areas of life. Through this unique blend of discipline, creativity, and community support, Skatematics is shaping a new generation of fearless and self-assured young Ghanaians.
Beyond the Board: The Feed the Street Project
Troop SB’s commitment to the community extends beyond skateboarding. Understanding that true empowerment comes from both skill-building and social responsibility, the group launched the Feed the Street Project. This initiative is dedicated to helping underprivileged individuals in Kumasi by providing them with free meals and essential supplies.
Through this project, Troop SB has combined its passion for skateboarding with a sense of duty to give back to society. The initiative is a reflection of their belief that skateboarding is not just a sport; it is a movement rooted in care, connection, and community development.
A Future on Four Wheels
Troop SB’s vision extends beyond Kumasi. As the collective continues to expand its reach, it aims to make skateboarding a recognized and respected sport in Ghana. The success of programs like Skatematics proves that there is a growing interest in the sport, and with the right support, infrastructure, and visibility, Ghana could develop a thriving skateboarding culture.
The long-term goal is to establish permanent skate facilities, create more training programs, and foster a competitive skateboarding scene in Kumasi and beyond.
